General Country Information
The Republic of Tunisia achieved independence from France in 1956 and was then ruled for three decades by Habib Bourguiba. The current president Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali dismissed him in 1987 and has since then changed the constitution twice in order to remain president. Tunisia has a population of 10.1 million in total, of which 98% are Arab, the remainder is of Berber origin. 98% of the population is Muslim and 78.3% is literate.
