General Country Information

The Republic of Yemen was declared in 1990 with the reunification of North Yemen and South Yemen. Ali Abdullah Saleh became the first elected president of the Republic of Yemen and was reelected in 2006. Prime Minister Ali Muhammad Mujur was installed in March 2007.

Yemen has a high population growth rate of 3.4 percent. According to a 2007 estimate the population is now 22.2 million, of which about 55 percent is Sunni and 42 percent is Shia.

Literacy is low at 50.2 percent.
